A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
