'Did It Not Captivate?' The Reason a Two-Day Match Deserved Its Status as a Genuine Cricket Test.

Within a display cabinet on the upper level of the MCG is housed a neon pink ensemble performed in by the entertainer. His performance in front of a massive crowd of fans was seen as a major hit.

Perhaps you don't enjoy his music. Maybe you feel he is the greatest gift to music known to man. Alternatively, you may hold a middle ground, conceding that some tracks are excellent while others are awful.

The key argument is that entertainment can manifest in countless ways. Tastes vary. There is no universal formula to produce literature or even Test cricket.

The Peerless Spectrum of Test Cricket

The traditional format boasts peerless complexity. It is hard to think of another sport where the playing is so dependent on the environment.

The elements, the time of day, the red ball – the list is endless. Most important is the playing surface.

If the format is art, the strip is the blank slate on which the cricketers craft their legacy.

An Abstract Contest: The MCG Match

The fourth Ashes Test between the two sides was an abstract version of cricket, the established format taken to pieces and reconstructed in abstract form.

It must be stated this is not a defence of the pitch which yielded a win and the another short match of the contest.

Having excessive grass on the pitch, resulting in 36 wickets tumbling in less than a brief period, is not an even battle between batter and bowler.

A Varied History: The Essence of Test Cricket

But any notion this was a diminished spectacle, one that should be footnoted as not a proper Test, is incorrect.

The long game is a varied portfolio, 2,615 parts and still growing. On occasion, as seen at the MCG, the ball does all sorts for the pace bowlers. Other times, it grips and turns on a dust bowl. Sometimes, the pitch is dead, other times it bounces unevenly.

The thrillers are all the more thrilling owing to the time devoted during quieter periods.

Adaptation: The Real Challenge

Certain variables are accepted more easily than others.

The contention in at the MCG was that the equilibrium was weighted unfairly towards the fielding side. That the best players were unable from demonstrating their skill.

The format is about adapting to challenges – interpreting the conditions and adjusting accordingly. The top two individual innings were made by acknowledged players. One side was less disciplined than the other, and thus ended up second best.

Unbridled Joy: The Fan Perspective

Go and inform the fans who have suffered 18 winless matches that this was not entertaining.

In one section of the ground, countless fans made noise and chanted, producing a carnival vibe in a stronghold of national pride.

There was optimism as the attack surged, impetus when batters scored quickly, and unconditional love when the win was achieved.

Extreme Ends: The Spectrum of Test Matches

The MCG has form with controversial surfaces. Previously, a match there featured a wicket with the character of a a damp squib.

That contest was a slog, with limited drama and slow play. The latest encounter and that drawn affair are polar opposites of the range – neither perfect, yet historical weight can be ascribed to each.

Deep into the series into the current series, it is the quick finishes that will be most remembered in the history books.

"It's not the demise of the format at all," commented a former player. "Fans who have been privileged to see these short time have been experienced some genuine drama. An unusual spectacle."

Baby Steps: Looking Ahead

In the lead-in to this match, the leader addressed the media like a man carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.

The squad delivered for him, restoring the positive demeanor to his countenance.

Emerging talents stepped up with crucial roles. These are small positives, certainly not enough to ensure long-term stability, but a starting point to develop from.

At the very least, this triumph takes its place among other historic performances in similar circumstances.

As the supporters slipped away into a beautiful night, the team assembled on the outfield to commence their own enjoyment.

Celebrate the win, men. You've earned this one.
