Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise
Weight management involves ongoing approaches.
A recent study suggests that people who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such treatments should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the way of the injections explains the heightened regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
