Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System for the First Time.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors are granted the right to question specific calls made by the official, following the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:
If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
